Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, the majority of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies may notice more symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
